Things Only YOU Can Do For Him

John 12:3-7: Then took Mary a pound of ointment of spikenard, very costly, and anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet with her hair: and the house was filled with the odour of the ointment. 4 Then saith one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, Simon*s son, which should betray him, 5 Why was not this ointment sold for three hundred pence, and given to the poor? 6 This he said, not that he cared for the poor; but because he was a thief, and had the bag, and bare what was put therein. 7 Then said Jesus, Let her alone: against the day of my burying hath she kept this.

1 Corinthians 11:15: But if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her: for her hair is given her for a covering.

Our focus on Mary*s deed is often on the great value of the spikenard. Anointing Jesus* feet with the ointment was a tremendous gift. But I believe she gave Him an even better gift. She wiped His feet with her hair. Some ladies are very fussy about their hair. Her hair is often the last thing my wife gives attention to when we go out. And she often pays attention to it while we are out. Ladies might not recognize it as glory, but something in them knows that their hair is something special about them. Often their hair is the loveliest thing about them. I don*t think any of them would normally permit their hair to come in contact with someone else*s feet. Many people have given valuable things to the Lord, but I have never been aware that any other woman on the face of the earth has ever wiped someone else*s feet with her hair.

John 12:7a: Then said Jesus, Let her alone: . . .

Mary had for her Defender the Saviour, the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords. He defended her from that pawn of the Devil, Judas. What a comfort! We have that same Defender defending us whenever we do anything for Him or give anything to Him and whenever we are in trouble.

Psalm 59:16: But I will sing of thy power; yea, I will sing aloud of thy mercy in the morning: for thou hast been my defence and refuge in the day of my trouble.

Mark 14:9: Verily I say unto you, Wheresoever this gospel shall be preached throughout the whole world, this also that she hath done shall be spoken of for a memorial of her.

I believe that her hair was even more glorious after Mary wiped the Saviour*s feet with it. I believe that for the rest of her life, every time she combed or brushed her hair or looked in a mirror, she had a moment of joy in remembering the privilege she was given of doing something for the Saviour that was given to no one else.

I believe that there are things that the Lord wants me to do that no one else could do. That is not boasting. I believe that there are things that the Lord wants all of us to do that no one else could do. He has placed each of us in particular places at particular times to do particular things. What joy it is, when, like Mary, we find what God wants us to do for Him and we do it. And that joy can be experienced again and again each time we remember doing the things He gave us to do.
